I choosed this poem " The Haunted Palace" by Edgar Allan Poe because i wanted a scary, supernatural poem.Something i knew could relate to my english class topic.Edgar Allan Poe is known for his work of supernatural. If its not his spooky poems its definitely his stories that show his work of supernatural. The poem itself seems very dark and mentions spirits as well as death. It contains tone as well as symbolism.

The word Tone is the quality of something that shows or expresses the attitude and presuppositions of the author. In the poem "The Haunted Palace" by Edgar Allan Poem the tone of the poem seems very dark, gloomy as you continue throughout the poem.In the beginning it gives off the tone of something positive with mentioning bright colors how the valley is at its greenest and even angels.Later throughout the poem he mentions death and spirits. " But evil things in robes of sorrow, assailed the monarach's high estate" the tone here is evil,as well as mysterious.

Symbolism is giving meaning or character to literature.Edgar Allan used symbolism in his poem in different forms. He mentions alliteration, simile and much more with lines such as " Banners yellow, glorious, golden,on its roof did floot and flow"," while, like a ghostly rapid river, through the pale door a hideous throng rush out forever".He is using nature and objects to compare and describe something murky." The Haunted Palace symbolizes death, and evil doing all within a palace while a king use to rule a goverment of monarachy.

In conclusion the poem brings to the reader a feeling of darkness a curiosity of what might of been done to the king, why are the spirits still wondering his palace, what was the evil that roamed his palace.Edgar brings forth to his readers a mix of emotions, understanding throughout this poem.A reader might understand it as a positive poem and others might read and understand it as something dark, spooky. He gives his readers two sides of understanding his poem but at the same time a pleasure in reading his work.He mentions tone and symbolism that with each reader might be a different meaning to.

  1. I love Edger Allan Poe's writing. Two poems I love from him are "AnnaBell Lee" and "Romance". Good examples of tone and symbolism, but where did you get the definitions from? Use some outside sources. Also just double check your grammer. Other than that great!

Great poem from a Great poet! i agree with your belief that the poem brings to the reader a feeling of darkness a curiosity, also it was great that you talked about alliteration, simile and much more with lines such as " Banners yellow, glorious, golden,on its roof did floot and flow", in my conclusion, i think that our instructor would be the only one to suggest to add or remove a few things.

  9. I like the tone of this poem. It starts everything with bright and positive words. But later it changes to all dark and negative things. The poet create more than one tone in this poem. :)

  12. Edna, what I can suggest is double-check your definition for symbolism and to cite your sources. Aside from that, I think you pretty much covered the basic requirements for the assignment.

  13. Hey Edna! I was supposed to comment on your blog a few weeks back and i'm really sorry about the late response. Anyway i think you did a good job of sticking to the outline of the essay topic. You could've added a bit more to describe how symbolism is represented in the poem. It was good keep it up! Take care.
